Our arrival in Tallinn was heralded by an
old ketch rig where those aboard were dancing in a long hand held chain. Maybe
vodka at 9:00 is also the go here in Estonia.
QV was resplendent in the morning sun and
while we were looking forward to a quite stroll others were busy lowering life
boats.
Tallinn is an old city that dates back to
1154. It has a lower and higher town that were developed separately. The
medieval towers surround both towns and greenery abounds.
As do flowers. The fragrance from these
stalls was intoxicating.
Although there are many old buildings there
are quirky elements. This boot down pipe was particularly imaginative. The
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was undergoing refurbishment but was still stunning.
The upper town is centred on Toompea Hill
and in the past was ruled by German Aristocrats. Their presence continues with
the German Ambassador's residence both attractive and commanding.
The top of the hill is crowned by the
Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin. Internally the decor is somewhat plain
compared to the churches of the previous couple of days. The walls were white washed
and decorated by a range of coats of arms.
The view from the top of the tower included QV framed by the city's towers.
Helen was attracted to the bells and
inevitably had to strike them to hear their chime. Fortunately the knock was not so
loud as to attract the guard or police!
The main square was dominated by the Town
Hall. It reminded us of a smaller version of Brugge with three sides dominated
by restaurants. We had some lunch - I had blood sausages which were full of
barley and not as spicy as black pudding. Helen had some small lamb sausages
with a strong mustard sauce. We felt we were quite adventurous but were not
bold enough for Elk or Bear which we're also on the menu.
A beautiful city that warrants a further
visit, however I suspect this may be a bit too far and too much of a challenge
with the 'van......
